The Northgate End Chapel was built originally in 1696 as a presbyterian chapel. The first sermon was given on 11 November 1696 by Oliver Heywood. A second church was built some time in the 18th century. The congregation gradually moved towards Unitarianism. A third church was built in 1872, and finally closed in 1979. In the 18th century the church was reputed to have a larger congregation than Halifax Parish Church.
