Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery, also known as the Old Catholic Cemetery in Guadalupe, California, contains the graves of some of the first settlers, early ranchers, in Guadalupe. Most of those buried are still there, although there are only a few gravestones left. The cemetery is surrounded by a barbed wire fence and covered by high weeds, tree-like bushes, and nettles making it difficult to get onto the site. Cattle were grazed there in former years, so the remaining tombstones are broken and moved about.
In summer of 2010, a local resident of Guadalupe, California, Mr. Nunez, continues to restore this very old cemetery. He has erected 30 white wooden crosses in honor of the lost headstones. He tells of maintaining a watch over the cemetery and is very involved in the local Cemetery District.
Interment List is at the SBCGS, donated to the Santa Barbara County Genealogical Society by Shirley Contreras of Santa Maria Historical Society and listed in Ancestors West, Vol. 26, No. 3, Spring 2000.
