York, Mt. was started Jan. 13, 1866. Formally New York City/New York Gulch in Meagher County, was the mining area at that time. When the town was started so was the cemetery, which is on top of a mountain. The only way to get to the cemetery, was by walking and horse's pulling the casket. To this day you can not drive to it, walking is the only way. The cemetery is still use, the last funeral was in 2009.
The first funeral was D.A. O'Donnell, Jan. 19,1866, only 6 days after the start of York.
The was many deaths in this mining area, with head stone scatted around the mining area. Some are known, but,there are many that are not and maybe will never be known.
1870 Meagher Co. Mt. Census-153 families lived around the area.
The York Cemetery was vandulized some years ago, the head stones were scattered in the area. The head stones that were found were put back in the cemetery.
There is 20 Unknown Graves in the cemetery, according to the York Historical Society. Within that 20, 7 have markers, but unknown of who is buried in the site.
