This cemetery is located in the north of Amherst, New Hampshire, on the boarder with the town of New Boston. It was a private burying ground on land owned by the Harvell family for many years. In 1830 Joseph Harvell sold it to the Town of Amherst (Hillsborough County, NH, Deed 166:134). Conditions recorded in the deed were that it would be kept forever as a burying place and that inhabitants in the vicinity, including certain farms in New Boston, would be permitted to bury their dead here.
Special appreciation is extended to Ryan Dwyer of Boy Scouts of America Troop 22, Amherst, NH, for making the Chestnut Hill Graveyard his Eagle Scout Project, October 2000.
