Add PhotosIn 1847, Nancy Sanders Theall, widow of Joseph Tarkington, donated land in front of the cemetery to the First Methodist Church for the purpose of building a church. In time there was no more burial plots and the cemetery was abandoned. Lacking maintenance, many graves became unstable and vandals damaged others. Years later, in order to build a church hall for the growing parish, the cemetery had to be covered over.
The only grave that was moved before the demolition was that of the kind lady who donated the land for the church. Her grave is now located in the yard to the right of the Church.
Before the gravestones were destroyed some members of the community went through the cemetery and wrote down the information from the markers. The names entered on this site were taken from those lists.
In 1976, to recognize the daughters of Revolutionary War Patriots who were buried in the cemetery, a plaque was mounted on the outside wall of the Church Hall.
