Knoll Cemetery

Lowman, Chemung County, New York, USA
Memorials 11 added (91% photographed)

This cemetery on a hill above Lowman, Chemung County, New York, is the final resting place of a number of members of the Baldwin Family, early settlers in the area. Probably buried here besides the men with stones are Patience Rathbun Baldwin, wife of Isaac, Sr., Celinda Hazen Burnham, wife of Waterman Baldwin, and Mary Fuller Baldwin, wife of Thomas Baldwin and Alice Haskell, wife of Isaac, Jr. Also Israel Moon, husband of Susanna. There is evidence of the graves, but no existing markers. Waterman's grave has evidence of graves on either side of his and legend says that the other grave is of Falling Feather, a daughter of Cornplanter and possibly the second wife of Waterman.

The Carpenter family buried some members here after obtaining the land from the Baldwin family.

Also four other revolutionary soldiers, Adam Hunter, Lt. McCauley and two unknown privates are supposed to have been buried here after the Battle of Newton (Elmira).

Twelve Indians and 4 British Rangers that died at the Newtown Battle were also said to be buried here. They had been buried in Lowman and were exhumed at the time of the construction of the Chemung Branch Canal and moved to The Knoll.
