The Bergkirche in Schleiz is located on the Bergfriedhof. It has been the burial place for several members of the royal house of Reuss-Schleiz. Underneath the Baroque church are several crypts.
The von Reuss family, named all of their male children Heinrich (English: Henry) since the end of the 12th century in honour of Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor (1190β97), to whom they owed the estates of Weida and Gera. The head of each branch of the family bore the German title FΓΌrst (Prince) as did their children. After World War I, the Reuss territories were unified in 1919 as the Republic of Reuss, which was incorporated into the new state of Thuringia in 1920.
The crypt is in a very desolate condition and currently not accessible for visitors. A few coffins had deteriorted to the point of no repair. On March 12, 2008 the remains of a few family members were "re-interred" in newer "bone boxes" (Beinkisten).
