The Schwerin Cathedral (in German: Schweriner Dom) is dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint John. It was built following the move of the seat of the Bishopric of the Abodrites, established by Henry the Lion, to Schwerin from Mecklenburg in the late 12th century.Originally just a wooden construction it served the city as a place of worship. The foundation stone of the cathedral of the former Prince-Bishopric of Schwerin was laid in 1172. After a construction period of 27 years, the cathedral was consecrated in 1248. The cathedral is now a Lutheran church.
The towers weren't added until the late 19th century.

Some members of the noble house of Mecklenburg have found their final resting place inside this cathedral. Either in the Heilig-Blut-Kapelle (Holy Blood Chapel), or in the crypt.
