The Barge Cemetery (also called Barge-Salter Cemetery) was a small family Cemetery located on the property of Abraham Barge who drew land in the Ga Land Lottery of 1832. Abraham's property was in McBride's District.
There are only a few original markers left; however, there are depressions for 6-7 graves. There is an old gate indicating that the cemetery was once cared for.
From the intersection of Ga Hwy 68 (Balls Ferry Rd) and Ga Hwy 272 in the western part of the county, go northeast on Ga Hwy 68 for 1.9 miles to a driveway on the right at coordinates 32° 49' 36.6" N 82° 53' 20.6" W. Walk or drive 0.5 mile south as the crow flies to the cemetery in some trees to the left of the logging road (as of Jan 2011).
The cemetery has a deteriorating fence around it. The enclosed area is approx 30' by 100'. As of January 2011, the area had been logged and the cemetery stood as an island of trees in the middle of the logged area. As of 2013, family members have made headstones for the known graves and have been working to restore this cemetery.
The cemetery still exists, is on private property.
2014 - Barge family members have attended this cemetery; adding headstones and documenting graves.
