According to local lore, there are four members of the Lost Meek Wagon Train of 1845 buried at Rimrock Springs. This is substantiated by Jessee Harritt and Samuel Parker's journal entries state that this ill-fated group stopped at Rimrock Springs, where, they "found good grass, no wood except for a little sage," and "beried 4 persons here" on their terrible ordeal going towards The Dalles.

Andrew Morrow Jr., whose father was a settler in the Grizzly area and one of the partners of the Morrow Keenan Sheep Company, says that the lost pioneers are buried beneath a large pile of rocks on the hill. Some historians believe that a total of twenty-four persons died between Boise and Prineville, and more beyond that point. The party became splintered in the High Desert, and the group is known to have camped on the Deschutes rim northwest of Madras, at Sagebrush Springs (Gateway), where Samuel Parker notes the burial of 6 more persons, and on Hay Creek. Eventually the group ferried over the Deschutes in wagon beds and moved on to The Dalles.
