Strangeways Prison opened in 1868 as a replacement for Manchester's aging New Bailey Prison. It had its own gallows and executed prisoners were buried in a small cemetery on the grounds. Following a 1990 riot that destroyed much of the facility, the prison was rebuilt and the cemetery demolished. The remains of between 60 and 100 prisoners, including those of the famous "Manchester Martyrs", were cremated and reinterred in two communal plots at Blackley Cemetery in Manchester. Strangeways is now officially known as HM Prison Manchester.
