Add Photos25 Feb 2005 We went up to visit Quillian Cemetery today. The good news is we found Sullivan E. and Elizabeth Bell's headstones. The bad news is there was metal fence right in front of the stones. We will need to go back up with some yard tools and a high powered flashlight. We lucked out when we stopped at a house where a little boy was playing. We asked for his parent, and his mother, who is a school teacher, happened to be home. She sent us four driveways down. Although no one was home, Ken wandered in the back woods and found the cemetery. He took several photos and read the stones to me via cellphone. We then left for lunch, and came back to find the daughter of the woman who owned the house. She sent us about 3 more driveways down where some construction was being done. We went there and the foreman loaned us his ATV and told Ken how to get to the cemetery from that side. This time, I was able to go up with him. Believe me when I say the ATV was the best option. We found several more headstones covered by ivy. We pulled as much of the ivy back as possible, but still did not find all the stones. There should be five more up there. One of the ones we did find was of a revolutionary war soldier, John Stevenson, 20 Nov 1750 – 27Apr 1851. Someone had been digging in the grave. I was glad we were warned by the neighbors. Apparently the fence that was right in front of the two Bell stones is supposed to be around that gravesite as it was marked by the D.A.R.
We made a second trip on 6 Mar 2005. This time we found the right place to turn. The house just prior to the construction site has a road that goes from the driveway straight back to the cemetery. We took some water and a sponge to clean up the headstones a bit to take better photos. What a job!
