The church building is mainly from the 14th century. However, the walls of the nave may date from before the William the Conqueror invasion of 1066.
A major restoration was carried out under the supervision of Sir Gilbert Scott, in the 19th century. The 130 feet high copper-sheathed broach spire was reconstructed after a severe gale in 1936.
The churchyard is dominated by the stone cross designed by Eric Gill and commemorates those who died in the 1914-1918 War.
