This shrine in the center of Najaf contains gold tiles covering the dome and two 35-meter high minarets each made of 40,000 gold tiles. The inside is decorated with neon lights reflecting off mirrored tiles and hammered silver walls. The site has often been looted, most recently by the Saddam Hussein regime. For Shia, Imam Ali Mosque is the third holiest shrine after Mecca and Medina. Ali's tomb is said to have been discovered around 750 AD. A shrine was built over it in 977, which later burned down. It was rebuilt in 1086 and rebuilt again about 1500.
