Per the History of Richland County 1880, the town of Newcastle was laid out December 1834 by Frederick Cassell and Adam Webber, the name of the former suggesting the name of the town. The town failed to flourish, in part due to the close proximity of Ontario, and by 1880 only had a population of about forty. A church was built there in 1838 by the Lutherans. The church, as the town, had fallen into decay by 1880, unoccupied for years by that time. Newcastle cemetery was most probably associated with the church and has now suffered the same fate of decay as most stones are piled together or fallen.
