Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
The "Landeseigener Friedhof Columbiadamm" is located in the Neukölln district of Berlin, just north of the former Airport Tempelhof (closed in 2008). This city owned and run cemetery had many names; in 1861 he was called "Neuer Garnisonsfriedhof", in order to differentiate it from the old one. After 1919 it was just called "Garnisonsfriedhof" , since 1970 it's "Friedhof am Columbiadamm". It has a size of 104.044 m² (25.7 acres) and currently contains about 7000 grave sites. Part of the cemetery is designated for the Turkish community in Berlin and known as the
Türkischer Friedhof am Columbiadamm.
