An original Saxon nunnery was destroyed by King Canute, and rebuilt as a Benedictine monastery in 1043 by Leofric, the Earl of Mercia, and his wife, Lady Godiva, dedicated to Saint Mary. The See was moved to Litchfield at the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538, and the priory fell to ruins. The west end of the cathedral is now open excavations.
BURIALS ARE BETWEEN 1100 AND 1538
