Add PhotosKnown as the Kirk of Aberuthven, the Pre-Reformation medieval chapel of St. Kattan's existed before 1171 and was dedicated to St. Cathan, Bishop and Confessor in the 6th Century. Earl Ferteth (d.1171), and Countess Ethne, the parents of Gillebrigte, Earl of Strathearn, provided the land. The grant was confirmed by King William at Scone on 5 September 1198. In 1618 St. Kattan's lost its status as a Parish Church and fell into disrepair.
It is on a terrace above and West of the water of Ruthven and overlooks Strathearn.
The east wall has a medieval pair of small ogee-headed windows indicating the later 14th century. The south wall Serliana central opening was adapted as a doorway in 1758, by John Steven. The internal connection with the church was severed leaving a free-standing mausoleum. The east end of the south wall is a short stump with the west end rebuilt when a four-centered-arched doorway was inserted as the entrance to the Graeme burial enclosure. That doorway and the enclosure behind it indicate the earlier 19th century, as does the narrower Duff-Duncan burial enclosure to its east. The south wall was knocked down for the Dukes of Montrose Mausoleum, an ashlar-built square structure projecting from the south side, built by and bearing the inscription "John Adam—fedet 1736. The south face has a Serlian tripartite opening and the pyramidal roof is surmounted by an urn.
The three mausoleums were built during the 18th and 19th centuries but are no longer accessible. Two of them now occupy the western section with one in the center of the building. The Dukes of Montrose, the Graemes of Inchbrakie, Orchill, and Damside, all had rights of burial in the church.
