The Stadtkirche in Darmstadt dates back to the 12th century. The current structure was built in 1844. Severely danmaged during WW II it was rebuilt and is now the city's main Lutheran House of Worship. It seats about 1200 people for services and concerts. The sides of the naves exhibit many cenotaphs of the nobles buried in crypts underneath the church. Several crypts contain coffins dating back to the 17th century. Mainly dukes and landgreves of the House of Hesse-Darmstadt and their family members are buried here. In a side crypt several clergymen of this church and their families found their final resting place. The remains of the Higher House of Hesse-Darmstadt (Granddukes and Princes) have been moved to the newer burial grounds on the Rosenhöhe (Old and New Mausoleums). Those mausoleums are still the grave sites for the current members of the House of Hessen-Darmstadt.

Other burial grounds in Darmstadt are:
Alter Friedhof
Arheiliger Friedhof
