Search Loftus Pullin Family Cemetery:

The old Loftus Pullin farm was located about one mile north of Clover Creek, Virginia. It was the custom in the 1770's in rural America to bury family members on the family farm.

The Shutmate/Shutmate-Vance Cemetery was originially known as the Pullin Cemetery. This appears to be a very old cemetery and probably have many unmarked graves. The Pullins lived about midway between McDowell and Clover Creek, Virginia. Most likely this cemetery was once located on the Pullin's property. It's my understanding from old property records that Loftus Pullin, Sr. own serveal hundred acres along Route 678. Most likely Loftus and his wife Nancy Ann Jane (Usher) Pullin are buried here. There are no tombstones for Loftus, Nancy Ann Jane, their son Samuel and his wife, Sarah (Henry) Pullin.

In the book, THE BICENTENNIAL HISTORY OF BATH COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1791-1991, The Bath County Historical Socitey, published by the Heritage House Publishing, Marceline, Missouri, there is this statement "Buried: (refering to Samuel and Sarah (Henry) Pullin) in the Pullin Cemetery, now Shutmate or Shutmate-Vance Cemetery."
