BUTTEVANT – possibly from the Norman-French boutez en avant (push forward, a de Barry warcry). The Irish name is Cill na Mallach (the church of the curses)
This friary was founded for the Franciscans between 1251 and 1279 by David de Barry, Lord of Buttevant. Only the Church survives intact from the 13th century. It has a nave (where the congregation sat) and a chancel (where the main altar was located) and a south transept from which a single chapel projects to the east. Beneath the chancel is an elaborate crypt which may have been built to compensate for the steep slope on which the east end of the church is built.
The friary’s other buildings - such as the chapter house where day-to-day business was carried on and the refectory where the friars had their meals – stood around a cloister (courtyard) to the north of the church where most of the present graveyard is now. Fragments from the cloister arcade are built into the wall inside the church
The friary was dissolved in 1540 during Henry V111’s campaign to acquire the wealth of the Church, but the friars seem to have remained until 1568 when Viscount Barrymore took possession of the property. By 1609 a community had returned and it adopted the strictest observance of the monastic rule.
The entire remaining structure is a designated National Monument.
