Old Beech River Cemetery

  • 3075 Old Huntingdon Rd, Timberlake, Henderson County, Tennessee, 38351 USA
  • 83 Memorials added (78% photographed)

From the intersection of TN-22 & TN-412 in Lexington, travel northerly on TN-22 for 2.5 mi., turning west (left) onto Oak St., going 0.4 mi., turning north (right) onto Old Huntingdon Rd., going 0.6 mi. to an partially hidden, gated driveway on the west (left). At gate, sign indicates: "FOR ENTRANCE, SEE SHERIFF".
The pics Gary Barnes took in 2017, indicate that the cemetery has been significantly cleaned up, but not restored after it was heavily vandalized, before 1990. This early cemetery was used for black & white burials.

On the opposite side of the road from the northern end of Beech River Cemetery is a small gravel pullout and a locked gate partially hidden by young cedars. A sign says for entrance, see sheriff. This is the beginning of the access drive for Old Beech River Cemetery. Even if you could open the locked gate you cannot drive in as the southern end of the drive is overgrown. Fallen trees block it further north. Though the cemetery is beside the Old Huntington Highway, it is not recognizable as a cemetery from the road.

Old Beech River Cemetery may be the cemetery sometimes called Timberlake Cemetery, though this term more likely applies to the very large walled family plot near the northern end of the Old Beech River Cemetery. This plot might contain 2-3 dozen burials. If previous records are correct, Old Beech River Cemetery dates to the 1820s & was in use until the 1920s. The current Beech River Cemetery east of the road was created in the 1890
