Dalesburg Baptist Church: Named for its location, it was first known as the Swede Baptist Church of Bloomingdale for the Swedish congregation and also Bloomingdale Baptist Church for the Bloomingdale post office. It was organized in 1871 in the home of G. Jonas Peterson. The present church structure was built in 1919 on land donated by Lars A. Peterson in the NE1/4, Section 17, Garfield Township, one mile SE of Dalesburg, at which time it was given its present name. Clay County Place Names, 1976, p.45.

The Dalesburg Community in NE Clay County is the oldest and largest Swedish settlement in the Dakotas. Its history is unique not only in the fact that a very significant amount of individual family and early community information has been preserved through the writing of August Peterson, but over the years DalesburgÂ’s rural identity has survived amid various community schools, business districts, post offices and church affiliations.

The name Dalesburg was originally used with the beginning of the Lutheran Church in 171. A small business district soon accepted the name with the errection of the Dalesburg Grocery store in 1875. The Post Office, opening in 1879 and operating out of that store, also accepted the name. The school district also used the name, which in the early years had several different spellings: Dahlsborg, Dalesberg and finally Dalesburg, identifying the majority of the Swedish setters as coming from the Province of Dalarna. The Bloomingdale Baptist Church, founded in 1871, was prevented in the late 1890s from changing its name to Dalesburg (Baptist Church) because of high legal costs, but eventually acquired the name in 1924.

Through the Baptist and Lutheran church memberships, the Dalesburg name came to include a much larger geographical territory than the local school or post office districts. Dalesburg Midsommar, 1978, p. 5.

Today the residents of the Dalesburg Community are served by the Vermillion, Beresford, Centerville and Burbank Post offices. The community is located between Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Sioux City, Iowa. (http://www.angelfire.com/sd/dalesburg99/ Accessed 2006, Dalesburg Scandinavian Association)
