Defunct cemetery, now a city park. Last burial was in 1866.

The cemetery was established in the 13th century, and located north and outside the walls of the city of Hanover. As the city grew so did the cemetery and eventually was located inside the city borders. By 1866 it was closed as the New St.-Nicolai-Cemetery (Neuer St.-Nikolai Friedhof) was opened. Between 1896 and 1902 the cemetery was changed into a city park. In the following 100 years the old grave stones were neglected and the park lost some areas to build new housing and road ways. After WW II, in 1953 the size of the park was diminished even more, and the old St. Nicolai Chapel was taken down except for a small piece still standing. The old grave markers were re-established (as many as 278 had survived) between 1996 and 2000, but not necessarily at their original location.
The Celler Strasse now devides the two remaining parts of the former cemetery with the ruins of the old St.-Nicolai-Chapel located in the southern part.
