The St. Paul Cemetery is adjacent to the Melissa Cemetery and was the original cemetery of the Sherley family who homesteaded the area in the 1800's and both family and slaves were buried there. After land was donated for a larger cemetery, the original cemetery became the black cemetery and it exists today as such.
It is easy to be confused because the two cemeteries are separated only by a small creek and there is no sign to designate the St. Paul Cemetery, however, it is not a part of the Melissa Cemetery and is deeded to the St. Paul Baptist Church in Melissa, Texas.
