Savannah United Methodist Church members were organized in 1786 as the Savannah Creek Methodist Society, but the first church was not started until 1787. Records show that Isaac Jackson was the first pastor at their church, Jackson's Meeting House. County records show a deed for Savannah Church dated 1819 from a Wm. Williams. In 1873, the church was a log structure located on what was known as the Luther Place near the Grassy Island Road. It is believed that Francis Asbury may have preached at Savannah as he traveled the rivers of the area.

The current building, an Anson County Historic Site, is located approximately seven miles north of Lilesville at the intersection of Grassy Island and Ingram mountain (formerly Ridge) Roads. This land was donated by T.J. and C.N. Ingram and the money for the building of a larger church was proposed in 1879 and was completed and dedicated in June, 1887.

The cemetery bears witness to the early settlers of the area. Joseph Downer and his wife are buried alone on the north side of the church. The Ingram brothers are buried in the main cemetery along with other Ingrams and Downers. Some other well-known settlers' names found there are Capel, Currie, Holder, hough, Hatcher, Howell, Maness, Mills, Newton, Price, Seago, Sinclair, poplin, and Webb, all connected in some way through marriages to Downers.
