Cementerio Municipal #1
Also known as:  Cementerio Antiguo de Caguas

  • Calle Ramón Emeterio Betances #400, Caguas, Caguas Municipality, Puerto Rico, 00727 USA
  • 1,109 Memorials added (10% photographed)

The decision to establish this cemetery came to be in 1855 when the Junta de Visita de Caguas met. The grounds were blessed by Ángel Renuchi and a much older 1814 cemetery, which was destroyed several times during different hurricane seasons, stopped doing funerals there. This newer cemetery began its operation on December 25, 1855. The construction of its mampostería gate started in 1857 and in 1887 was still not finished and animals were getting inside. When Caguas was awarded the title of city in 1894 this was the only cemetery available. At least since the publication of the book "Historia de Caguas" by historian Oscar L. Bunker Aponte in 1974, this cemetery is also known as Cementerio Antiguo de Caguas (Cementery details provided by Find A Grave member, Nélida Frontera-Muñoz).
