There has been a church on this site since about 800 AD.
The Cathedral is remarkable in posessing a Consistory Court, dating from 1740, in which the Bishop, as Chief Magistrate, could dispense justice. The court still remains intact and is now used as a Baptistry.
It is a building steeped in history. In the words of Bishops DAY and PATTON, writing in 1932: ...."this remote Cathedral Church, which though of small dimensions, has singular attractiveness".
Raphoe is the smallest Cathedral City (Episcopal) in the continent of Europe.
