The Oakwood Mausoleum (formerly Fremont Mausoleum) was built in 1916-1917 by Latschau Brothers. They built mausoleums around the state. The land on which the mausoleum stands is owned by Oakwood Cemetery. However, permission was given to the Latschau Brthers to build the mausoleum. It is technically not part of Oakwood cemetery. Crypts were sold before the building was erected.
The Fremont Mausoleum Association was formed and was in charge of selling the crypts and maintaining the building. The association paid Oakwood cemetery for opening and sealing the crypts at the time of a burial.
Eventually most of the crypts were used and there was little income to maintain the building. Association membership was reductd to only a couple of people so the custodianship was turned over to a lawyer who took care of it for a number of years.
In view of the deterioration of the building, some of the persons interred in the mausoleum were moved either to burial places in Oakwood or other cemeteries in the county. In 1997 the mausoleum was turned over to the Ballville Township trustees.
The building is kept locked. You must see the Oakwood Cemetery manager to gain entrance.
Association records are incomplete. The crypt stones were read and recorded along with Oakwood cemetery and placed at the hayes Presidential Center in Fremont.
