Vernon Family Cemetery
Also known as:  Hankins Cemetery

  • in Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana, USA
  • 17 Memorials added (41% photographed)

The John Paul DAR transcription describes this as being on Victor Vernon's farm. The Jefferson County Road map shows this as the Hankins Cemetery. It was originally owned by Richard Vernon, Victor' grandfather. It was later owned by Isora Hankins, Victor's cousin, hence the Hankin name. The cemetery is in the SE 1/4 Section and is on the East side of the road running up the East Fork on the Indian-Kentuck Creek (slightly up the hill). The DAR note that is with the transcription is correct in showing that Richard Vernon came from North Carolina in 1828. However, his father and other family members, who settled on Vernon Ridge further east in Milton Twp., came in 1818.

The cemetery is located on the east side of N. East Prong Road. As you come around the corner, look to your right for two ramshackled century old barns. Carefully park your car off the road and follow the path past the barns and up the hill under the overhead power line. Then climb the hill and go for a while. Look for the obelisk off to your right that marks the Richard Vernon grave.
The cemetary is in the woods with no clear path marking the way
