The Pauper Cemetery is actually a part of Ocean View Cemetery. Burials were made along a sand ridge at the original entrance to Ocean View which was off 9th Street, one-half mile west of Main Street. Until approximately 1915, this was the only way to gain entrance to Ocean View and it still exists as a seldom used back road. Sand was removed in the area in October of 1917. Graves were destroyed and bones disturbed. Locals were recruited to gather the bones but no one is sure what happened to them. The remaining ridge begins about 50 feet from the road and a faint trail leads to the top. The underbrush has been burned off from time to time; therefore destroying any of the few remaining wooden markers.
No one is sure of the total number of burials but is estimated there are around 240. Many of the people buried here were the poor, vagrants, and others came from the County Poor House & Hospital. Many were unidentified.
