In the 1880s settlers began farming this area and a small community formed, called Lake Tapps after the nearby lake of the same name. An early pioneer, Daniel Orcutt, donated part of his land claim as community burying ground in 1889.

Most burials took place here in the late 1800s and early 1900s. By the mid 1900s the small cemetery was seldom used and overgrown. Eventually it came under the care of the Pierce County Parks Department, though it remained unmaintained.

In 2010 a local scout troop adopted the neglected cemetery and conducted a site cleanup. They also constructed a fence and sign, mistakenly calling it "Dieringer Cemetery" after another nearby settlement.

In 2012 a descendant of one of the early settler families began researching the cemetery and discovered its proper name and history. A rededication ceremony hosted by the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society took place in June 2014 and new sign restoring the original name was installed.
