The first church building was constructed in 1892 on four acres of land, which were donated by Ole Mattson in the SW corner of Section 18, Berlin Township, Cass County, North Dakota.
A cemetery was started on the church property around this time and the oldest marked grave in the cemetery is that of Carl Gustafson who died on November 10, 1892.
The name "Herby" was chosen for the church and cemetery as it was reminiscent of the home church in Skåne, Sweden.
