A CHISAGO COUNTY PIONEER CEMETERY
Sometime in the 1960's the headstone of Nels (Rodbom) ROBOM and 5 unmarked graves were discovered in a wooded hillside area on the Fish Lake Lutheran Church property. The stone was a Civil War marker without dates, only the customary name, rank, and regiment.
The North Branch American Legion sponsored the relocation of this veteran's interment to the front of the church graveyard. Nels Rodbom was placed next to an existing Civil War interment of Montgomery P. Smith.
In addition, the church cemetery committee marked the boundaries of this old pioneer cemetery and installed a steel cross to mark each of the remaining five graves. These interments were neither moved nor disturbed.
These five interments predate the church records so the identification of these individuals remains a mystery. They may be early territorial settlers, transients, or Native Americans who were laid to rest without formal documentation.
This cemetery site is located in the northeast corner of the 40 acre church property. The grave sites are not easily accessible. The photos to the right show an unmarked path and the new grave markers. Small reflectors were attached to several trees to help locate and delineate the area. This location is well hidden by a cornfield during the summer growing season.
