The Glenada-Odd Fellows Cemetery, located approximately 2 miles south of Florence, Oregon, is one of the oldest cemeteries in western Lane County. It was established in 1892 by the Heceta Lodge #111 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF).
There are approximately 140 burials in the cemetery, dating from the early 1890's up the current day. About half of the burials are marked. Records are problematic - a ledger of the IOOF lists burials, but gravestones are sometimes found elsewhere. Due to the rough condition of the cemetery, even marked graves are hard to locate with any accuracy on the cemetery map.
In 2003 the Siuslaw Genealogical Society undertook a project to research and compile a book about each burial in the cemetery. This book was completed and published as "Tangled Grass: The Story of Those Buried in the Glenada-Odd Fellows Cemetery." Copies of the book are available from the Cemetery Association at $20.00 a copy. The biographies attached to these listings are taken from "Tangled Grass."
In 2004 several interested individuals came forward to establish the Glenada-Odd Fellows Cemetery Association. In 2006 this group was awarded non-profit status by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The Association has conducted an inventory/survey of the cemetery; future plans include repairing headstones, fencing, and marking all gravesites.
Photographs taken by Mary Colgan-Bennetts, Suzanne Smith, and Kevin Mittge.
