In 1918 Frank Lenehamner, owner of Lot 56, Concession 2 WGR, donated 2.5 acres of the land to be established as a Catholic cemetery. This tract of land lies immediately to the east of what was then the Durham Cemetery. To this burial ground were brought bodies from Dornoch Cemetery. One of the first was John Shewell who had died in 1895, as well as his wife Honora Healy who had died in 1918. Some of the earliest burials were children, one of whom was Rose Sibbold of Durham, who died in 1923 due to whooping cough. Through the years the number of burials and headstones gradually increased. In 1963, during the time when Father Francis Hawkins was pastor of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Durham, a life-sized crucifix was erected. At night it is illuminated by a flood light, thus vividly portraying to all who pass, Christ's agony on the cross.
