The Old Oakland Cemetery is an old Indian Cemetery located across the street and 1/4 mile west of the Oakland Cemetery. In addition to the Old Oakland Cemetery and the Oakland Cemetery, there are two other cemeteries in proximity: the Woodberry-Forest Cemetery and the Madill Cemetery.
Directions: From the intersection of highways 70 and 199 in Madill, go west 1 mile on US 70, and the Old Oakland cemetery is on the south side of the highway. The grounds are well kept but most of the monuments are in terrible condition. Many are missing with only a base remaining, others have pieces missing and others have toppled onto the ground while others are broken into several pieces. The burials in this cemetery appear to be nearly all children, many of whom in the winter of 1899. Cholera and smallpox were rampant in Indian Territory in that year and this possibly may have been the cause.
Dennis was not able to find the real name of this cemetery. The locals just call it the Old Oakland Cemetery.
