Congregation Gates of Heaven Cemetery

The Congregation Gates of Heaven (Sharei Shomajim), the oldest Jewish Congregation in Schenectady, owns and maintains this cemetery. The cemetery land was purchased by Jonathan Levi in 1848. In 1857 a cemetery plot was sold for $55 for burial of Jacob Davis. The cemetery is a lovely, park-like setting which provides a contemplative atmosphere for remembering Jewish departed family members and friends.The cemetery is open 9-5 on Sundays in April through November. At other times, access to the cemetery is by key, which can be obtained from the temple office (518)374-8173. Office Hours are 8 am - 4 pm Monday through Friday, with the office closing at 12 noon on Fridays in July and August.
Directions from the New York State Thruway.
Take the New York State Thruway to Exit 25 (Schenectady- Route 890 to exit 7 East). As soon as you get off the ramp, get into the left lane. Turn left at the traffic light at Watt Street. The cemetery is on the right, about ½ mile down Watt Street. Please use the Pedestrian Entrance in the black wrought iron fence, around the turn on Watt Street.
