Adolphe Pauli, city-architect designed an drafted the original plan of this Cemetery in 1866, it is ca 14.000m² walled in cemetery, the cemetery had its first burials in 1873, Mayor Charles de Kerchhove decided Jewisch and Protetant could be buried there, the diocese refused quite a while to consecrate this cemetery and it got the nickname Geuzenkerkhof, It also has a Military burial ground with graves of ca 200 Belgian soldiers, 197 Commonwealth soldiers,many nationalities and 1 Dutch soldier.(this lot of wargraves is aka Gent City Cemetery)
