Willard -- A hamlet in the southwest corner, on the shore of Seneca Lake and County Road 132. Willard Drug Treatment Center -- A former state mental hospital that was taken over by the state prison system.
Willard Drug Treatment Center is a specialized state prison in Seneca County, New York, USA. The prison focuses on treatment of drug-addicted convicts. Willard Drug Treatment Center is located in Willard, a community in the Town of Romulus, and is adjacent to Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes District.
A former state mental hospital Founded by Dr. Sylvester D. Willard of Albany, New York, was the Secretary of the State Medical Society. In 1864 Dr. Willard was authorized by the legislature to investigate the condition of the insane poor. He submitted his report in 1865 which resulted in the creation of an asylum. Since Dr. Willard died that same year, they named the asylum after him.
there where in 1896 38 known Civil War Veterans buried there, as well as former inmates of the asylum. This Cemetery is inactive and maintain by the hamlet of Willard

Small area of the cemetery for Jewish burials. Numbered markers are visible in ground. Well kept in comparison to the rest of the cemetery which is nothing more than a vast overgrown field.
Overview of Willard Cemetery. Well maintained at one time by patient Lawrence Merek who cared for it for many years; digging many of the graves himself. When he died in 1968 the cemetery slowly declined. Cast iron markers were eventually removed and tossed away. A pile of numbered cement block was found at the back of the cemetery. This was done to make "mowing" easier". When i went there the grass was almost knee deep. Any signs of round markers that might be ground level are totally overgrown. We saw an American flag placed in the middle of the field and someone had dug away at the grass and undergrowth and had found a marker. Apparently someone had searched very hard to find this one particular grave and honor the person buried there with the American Flag.
Small section in cemetery where military markers were placed for patients who served our County. Almost all were for the Civil War. From what i understand(and i may be wrong), these markers do not actually mark original graves.

Looking to the northeast from behind the "Old Jewish Cemetery" sign and memorial at the southwest corner of the cemetery. Note the Lawrence Mocha memorial rock on the horizon to the left as well as two of the new section signs ("Old Protestant" and "Old Catholic").
In his half century as a Willard patient Lawrence dug over 1,500 graves of his fellow patients who are buried in this cemetery that they might have a final resting place long after the world had forgotten them. Placed by some of his admirers May 2015
