Fort Wingate Cemetery

Fort Wingate cemetery was established in 1860. It was an active military installation for a much longer time than most frontier forts. Located South of I-40, 12 miles East of Gallup.

El Paso Herald 24 Jun 1912
One hundred and sixty-five bodies of soldiers buried at Fort Wingate, McKinley county, which was recently abandoned by the war department, were today brought to Santa Fe for re interment in the National Cemetery. In taking out the bodies, in two cases, linen handkerchiefs around the throats of soldiers, buried 60 years ago, were found to be almost as good as new, while the rest of the clothing had rotted away. The large monuments, seven medium sized monuments and about 50 small monuments were brought to Santa Fe at the same time
