St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church traces its origins to the late 1930s when a priest would travel once or twice a month from Southport to Gause's Landing in Ocean Isle Beach. He would bring his lectern ashore and lead services under the live oaks while his wife would remain aboard playing hymns on a pump organ. The congregation grew, and in 1962 the first church was built in Shallotte on property given by Chandler Rourk near the Rourk family cemetery. Each of the original parish families was given plots in the graveyard, and a memorial garden was established. The earliest graves date from the mid 1800s. The current church building was erected on the same spot as the original, and was consecrated on Easter Sunday 1993.
