Cottonton Cemetery is located about 20 miles south of Phenix City, Alabama. Because the tiny community of Cottonton is African-American, the cemetery is so named. Cottonton lies between Phenix City and Eufaula, Alabama. The town is best known for the paper mill that supports the local community and others in and around Russell County, AL.
Directions: Traveling on Alabama Hwy 165, turn WEST on Russell County Road 54/Terminal Road and continue between one and two miles west until you cross a set of railroad tracks. Just beyond the RR tracks, you will see an intersection to the left - a dirt road named Patterson Road. To the right where Patterson would cross CR54, is a clay/sand road, which has extensive grass on both sides and down the middle. This is the road to the cemetery that lies about a half mile beyond on the right. You will need to drive through the grassy section that fronts the cemetery. (Don't try this after a rain!) You can see the cemetery from the dirt road. As of August 2011, the land needed to be cut, both in the parking area and around the individual graves.
