Philadelphia Lutheran (old) Cemetery

Granite Falls, Caldwell County, North Carolina, USA
Memorials 20 added (85% photographed)

This cemetery was deeded to Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls, NC, many years ago who has done nothing as far as upkeep and maintenance. Visit to cemetery on AUgust 4, 2007, shows it to be in very bad condition with trees, fallen trees, and overgrowth among the remaining stones. Examination of stones revealed someone had tried to recently read the stones as there was blue chalk on the stones. I read these stones about 1990 and have kept an eye on the cemetery occassionally though the years. Philadelphia Lutheran Church has deeded a portion of this land to the Town of Granite Falls for a road right-of-way to acess land at the rear of the cemetery to build a water tower. An inspection made available by Linda Story, town manager, by a retired NC state archaeologist originally identified 35 graves placed in six rows (first four rows containing marked graves, two rows of unmarked graves) which would allow a twenty foot wide access on the eastern edge of the cemetery for a road to be built. A later inspection by the archaeologist altered the results of the survey stating he had originally recorded one too many rows of graves on the east side. His final result was a cemetery of five rows, thus allowing 30 feet for an access road to be built. Seven unmarked graves and 21 marked graves which evidently included those with rock markers as well as the 13 tombstones. The town intends to clear and clean the cemetery once a road is built. Perhaps then Philadelphia Lutheran Church will be more aggressive in the cemetery upkeep.
