The name Unity Chapel was selected by Mattison Greenberry Brown when the church organizational meeting was held in his home in 1871, after his parents, James Young Brown and his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Glassco) Brown, had deeded one acre of land to the Trustees of the United Brethren of Christ in Charleston Township to build a church on.
Because of the involvement and close ties with members of the Brown family, the church was often called "Brown's Chapel".
