This cemetery is located on Cambridge Avenue and has an entrance marked by two stone pillars. However, the street hasn't always been called Cambridge. It was first called Broadway Street in 1847; it later became Main Street and even later, because of the churches on the street, it became known as Church Street. The exact date the street became Cambridge Avenue is not known, but it was after 1910.
In about 1855, the Methodists organized in Greenwood and bought the Fuller Institute building for their worship services. It became known as the Methodist Church. A cemetery, as was the custom in those days, grew up behind the Methodist Church and became known as the Methodist Cemetery and was the very first cemetery in Greenwood. The Methodists remodeled their building twice and it remained their sanctuary until they built a new edifice further west, but still located on what is now Cambridge Avenue. After the Methodists moved to their new location, they released the cemetery to the then new Greenwood Cemetery Association on 10 July 1910. No provision was made for perpetuating the Association and after the death of the last member, the cemetery was left without care and fell into ruin. In 1957, a group of citizens, headed by Mrs. Frances Arnold Parker, took on the project of improving the cemetery. Since that time, other groups have devoted efforts to repairing and maintaining the cemetery. In 2016, it was fairly well kept with the grass being mowed and most markers in good condition.
There is a 3 volume book in the Greenwood Library's genealogy room that includes the Greenwood Cemetery, from which this description came. It includes a listing of all burials from 1961 and 1981 surveys of the cemetery, which are listed by row and plot number. Row 1, Plot 1 starts at the side wall next to the National Health Care property to the west. As of April 2016, all legible markers have been photographed in this cemetery.
