In 1874 Euterpsey Murphree died, and she was the first person buried at what is now Lebanon Cemetery. The bronze marker erected in 1964 at the site of her grave gives the essential facts of her life and death, but many will read this have had the privilege of hearing Davis A. Murphree's moving account of the great friendship between his grandfather John Davis Amberson and Euterpsey's grieving husband, Solomon, and the subsequent donation of the cemetery land. The rocky hill was less than a mile from the Murphree homestead. John Amberson's son, Johney, who died in this twelfth year, was the second person buried in the new cemetery, and his grave is at the foot of Euterpsey's.

On December 1, 1881, John Davis Amberson and his wife Edna Elizabeth Westbrook Amberson deeded four acres of land for the cemetery, and the deed reads in part:

[W]e, John D. Amberson and his wife E. E. Amberson, for and in consideration of the love and affection which we bear to the dead and to the Methodist Episcopal Church, do hereby give, grant, and convey unto Solomon Murphree, Joseph W. Amberson, and Mace C. Murphree as trustees and their successors ... the following described real estate .. shall be kept and maintained as a cemetery forever.
