Search Old Union Burying Ground:

The Old Union Burial Ground was formed by a deed of Gift from David Alexander on 8/27/1837 to a group of Trustees inclduing George White,Moses Alexander, and Warren Pendergrass. The Land was originally an Alexander Family burial ground. Also on the land was an old Log Building and a Brush arbor which served all denominations. There was a board situated in a double chestnut that served as a pulpit for the Arbor. All denominations took turns worshiping here depending upon the schedule of the traveling Ministers. Thus it was called a "Union Church".All denominations: Lutheran,Prebysterian,ARP,Baptist and Methodist are buried in the Oldest section of the Cemetery.

Many years Later on 9/15/1886 Lavinia Mock Young ( a widow) gave 1 Acre of land adjacent to the Cemetery, for the construction of Marvin United Methodist Church.Lavinia was a Niece of Catherine Mock Alexander whose husband David gave the land for the Cemetery. The Lead carpenters were Julius Walter Dagenhart and His Uncle Jim Hedrick. Today the Cemetery serves both marvin UMC and Elk Shoals ARP,and the extended families of those already buried there. (to be updated later) Jerry Lynn Dagenhart.
