The cemetery is administered by the National Park Service. It is one acre in size and was established in the summer of 1864 shortly after the battle of Ft. Stevens between Union and Confederate forces, which occurred on July 11 and 12, 1864. The cemetery is a burial ground for the Union soldiers who died in that battle.
