Saint Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery

In 1918, a twelve acre plot on the Sharon-West Middlesex Road (now known as the Sharon-New Castle Road) was purchased by St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church. The land was blessed under the name of St. Mary's cemetery. It was later changed to St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery around 1974.

It was primarily established by Slovak Byzantine Ruthenian emigrants from the Carpathian Mountain area of Austria-Hungary. A terrible influenza epidemic also broke out in 1918 and many other ethnic groups were granted permission to bury their loved ones.

In the center of the cemetery, a large stone cross was presented to the parishioners of St Michaels from the village of Zavadka, Slovakia. Memorial services are held on special occasions at the alter below the cross.

The cemetery is not at the physical location of Saint Michael's Church (between Sharon & Hermitage). It is on Longview Road about 3 miles south of the church. There are 5 adjacent cemeteries on this stretch of Longview Road. Holy Cross & Holy Trinity are on the north side of the road; Saint Anns, Saint Anthonys, & Saint Michael are on the south side of the road. Saint Michael is the furthest south-east of the 5.
